The Japanese Garden: A Shopper's Guide

Based on my recent visit, here's what you can expect when exploring the Japanese Garden, and some points to consider before your visit.

Why You Should Visit

  • A Beautiful and Serene Setting: You'll find an enchanting and peaceful environment, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The layout is beautifully landscaped and the atmosphere is very relaxing.
  • Impressive Bonsai Exhibition: The garden features a collection of bonsai, some several decades and even over 100 years old. You'll appreciate the care and dedication that goes into maintaining these miniature trees. You can find a small garden inside the main building which houses a superb bonsai exhibit.
  • Interesting Features to Explore: The location offers a variety of features including architectural models and a couple of artificial waterfalls to explore. The variety makes the experience rich and interesting.
  • The Japanese Garden Experience: Don't miss the Japanese garden itself. The main pavilion is interesting and offers lavatories, a water fountain, and a workshop area.
  • Wonderful Photo Opportunities: You can expect a breathtaking visual experience, perfect for taking memorable photos, especially the main features of the garden.
  • Experiencing History and Culture: You'll feel transported back in time, experiencing the day-to-day life of a long-ago village.
  • Seasonal Blooms: You'll get a chance to enjoy different blooms, including cherry blossoms in the appropriate season.
  • Evening Visits: The garden offers night-time access. Visit at night to see the gardens illuminated, which is a unique experience and considered worth the ticket price.
  • Lotus Pond: You'll find a gorgeous little pond of lotus.

Why You Might Consider Alternatives

  • Pathways: Be aware that some pathways may need more upkeep. After rain, puddles can accumulate, potentially making navigation challenging.
  • Missing Stone Elements: The absence of expected stone features, particularly around the lake, might disappoint those familiar with traditional Japanese garden aesthetics.
  • Limited Lake Views: While you can walk around the lake, the path is partially obstructed by a thick forest, which limits the view in certain areas.
  • Artificial Elements: The use of blue dye in the water of the lotus pond, koi pond and waterfall is perceived as artificial.
  • Comparison to Other Japanese Gardens: If you've visited other Japanese gardens, the experience might fall short of your expectations. You may find it nice, but not outstanding.
  • Overall Impression: Some might find the garden a bit underwhelming, feeling that it's a manicured garden around a lake, but nothing more.
